Interview with Leanne Kingwell….
Who are your musical influences?
Early David Bowie, without a doubt. As a kid I spent every cent I could muster buying Bowie’s 70’s back catalog. Those records took me to places in my mind and I loved the journey. I aspire to do that for others with the records I make. Also The Clash, Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, Pixies and Nirvana are pretty cool too.
Who are your non-musical influences?
People who put themselves out to help others. People who think about why things happen before they blame and point fingers. People who appreciate their lives. People who take risks. And red wine.
When did you begin to play/sing, which instruments?
I’ve always been a musician because I’ve always found solace and joy in music. There is no better buzz than allowing music’s energy and emotion to coarse through you and out into your audience. I had a keyboard as a kid. As soon I was old enough, I got an after school job and bought an electric guitar. I joined a band and found performing resolved my need to express, release and rebel. There was no turning back.
What inspires you to do what you do in your music?
Writing is therapy for me. I dig around in the most inaccessible corners of my psyche for material. This is my self-awareness and my freedom. Every song I write comes from a place of personal truth and honest emotion. I retain my spiritual health like this. I find satisfaction and joy that I want to pass on to others
Is there a message or a statement you want to be heard in your music?
I want my songs to pose a question to the world, “This is how I FEEL…. Do YOU FEEL like this too?”
What is unique about your life/ philosophy and or purpose?
I’m not sure if it’s unique, but I’m determined to find the upside of despair through my art. Every song I write begins from a place of emotional angst and seeks a solution, an inspiration, empowerment or comfort, providing a key to a door to walk through to the other side of the thought that began the song. Why I’m fine in life and have happiness in my soul is because I know that whatever happens I’ll always create a door and walk through it.
What are your short term and long term goals?
My short term, and long term goal, is to always write better songs and create genuinely engaging recordings that don’t sound like anything you’ve ever heard before.
What would you like to be said about you by the press? Your fans?
That people identify with my music and find their own truths in it.
What advice would you give to young musicians/singers?
Be sure that you are totally committed because there is a hard road full of mountains and pitfalls before you. Work at your craft. Stay open to advice from those qualified to give it. And most of all stay strong.
What are your favorite quotes? This particular quote has sustained me all my life:
Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge 30th president of US (1872 – 1933)
Will/when you be on tour and where?
I’m no stranger to gigs having slogged it out on the live circuit in Melbourne for years. But touring is expensive, especially for a solo artist that needs to hire a shit hot full band to do justice to her material. So I’ve made the decision to focus on writing and recording until the fruits of this labor generate a genuine reason and demand for touring.
Is there anything else you would like to say. Um… Be good to your mother. Don’t take drugs. And don’t sleep with the band.
